Thomas Paine (29 January 1737 – 8 June 1809) was an English political writer, theorist, and activist who claimed American citizenship (a court later rejected his claim) and was given French citizenship. He wrote the three best selling books of the 18th Century; Common Sense, The Rights of Man and The Age of Reason.
